Dan Schaffer had a TV show called “The Answer” where he would take questions from the audience or were called in. One day he presented a list of quotes that were claimed to be in the bible but aren’t actually. Some were really close and people would argue that they were the same but it was as simple as one word being changed which changed the meaning of the verse (Ref Integrity of Translation).
QUOTE VERDICT
“My people perish for lack of knowledge” This is from Hosea 4:6 but the word “perish” is substituted for “destroyed.” This isn’t a terribly bad miss but every bible version I’ve pulled up uses “destroyed” so that is probably an accurate to use.
“God helps those who help themselves” It just isn’t there. This saying is attributed to Benjamin Franklin.
“Hate the sin but love the sinner” This has become a Christian teaching not because it’s a quote in the bible but rather a good practice (
Matt 5:43“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, (NKJV)
Matt 5:43,44 ).
“Cleanliness is next to Godliness” The origins of this probably stems from the ritual cleansing the priests were required to perform in the Old Testament (that or it was a way to get kids to take a bath). However there is nothing that equates Godliness with being clean.
“God moves in mysterious ways” While many times this is true, there is no scripture that says this. Many times we don’t know why God moves the way He does so this comes across as mysterious.
“The lion shall lay down with the lamb” I bet most people have seen the painting of
the lion laying down with the lamb but this isn’t in the scriptures (good thing I didn’t bet on this because I’d have lost). This probably started as a misquote of
Isa 11:6“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb,
The leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
The calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
And a little child shall lead them.

Isaiah 11:6 and just kept being repeated.
“The love of money is the root of all evil” This is a teaching that is based off an incorrect interpretation of
1 Timothy 6:10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Matthew 6:24 that was intended to teach that being rich is evil because the only way someone can be rich is to love money. However there is no biblical basis for this teaching. Putting money ahead of God (in
Matt 6:24“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

Ex 20:3“You shall have no other gods before Me. (NKJV)
Ex 20:3 ). Someone isn’t evil because they have money, they are evil because they put the money before God and by doing this they don’t honor God with their money.
“Pride comes before a fall” This is close to
Prov 16:18Pride goes before destruction,
And a haughty spirit before a fall.

Proverbs 16:18 but is like combining the first and second half’s into one statement.
“Spare the rod, spoil the child” This phrase is probably stems from
Prov 13:24He who spares his rod hates his son,
But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.

Proverbs 13:24 but twists it to say something that isn’t there.
“It is better to cast your seed in the belly of a whore than to spill it out on the ground” This is based off a cultural difference that is completely alien to us; namely is a man dies before he has a child it is up to his brother to step in and have children with the widow on behalf of the dead brother. Onan decides to commit quietus interruptus and God isn’t pleased with him and he dies, hence the non-biblical reference which is an incorrect interpretation of what actually happened (
Gen 38:6Then Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. 7But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord killed him. 8And Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.” 9But Onan knew that the heir would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother’s wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother. 10And the thing which he did displeased the Lord; therefore He killed him also. “All things work together for good” While this is nice thinking it isn’t what Paul was referring to in
Rom 8:28And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. (NKJV)
Romans 8:28 . There is a condition to this; you have to be "called according to His purpose" (a believer).
